Care for the Whole Child

ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï aims to provide care for the whole child. This includes the social, emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual wellbeing of each individual.

Wellbeing is the foundation of quality of life and human flourishing. Personal achievement, emotional resilience and social competence are predicated on children feeling safe, challenged, supported and connected to others.

At 51³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß, all teachers are teachers of wellbeing.

Respect for Self, Respect for Others and Respect for ºÚÁϳԹÏ

All students and staff at ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï have the right to be treated fairly and with dignity in an environment free from physical and verbal disruption, intimidation, harassment, and discrimination.

To achieve this, ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï will maintain high standards of student behaviour at all times. Respect for Self, Respect for Others and Respect for ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï replaces individual rules and acts as our guide to supporting students under our care.

We understand that from time to time students will make mistakes. Through our application of Restorative Justice, we aim to assist students in learning from their mistakes, reflecting on the consequences of their actions, developing empathy and modifying their attitudes and behaviour. We want our students to be kind, to show courage, and to seek wisdom.

Respect for Self, Respect for Others and Respect for ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï is also a partnership with parents working together to enable all students to flourish.

Responsibilities and Rights

URSTRONG Friendship Program Pre-K to Year 6

In any school - public or private, city or country - students will experience social problems and issues around friendships. Quite often, staff or parents tend to solve these issues; quite often, they are mistaken for bullying. URSTRONG is a friendship program that equips our students skills to confidently manage friendship issues and build healthy relationships. With helpful terms and concepts such as 'Friend-O-Meter', 'Mean on Purpose', 'Friendship Facts' and the 'Friend-O-Cycle', students learn to navigate and solve friendship issues.

Service Learning

At ºÚÁϳԹÏ, everyone contributes to something greater than themselves. Our education model is founded in experiential learning, including service learning.

In the Junior School, that means forming community connections and intergenerational links. It also means making positive contributions to local charities and participating in community events. Some examples include:

  • Creating connections through our Grandfriends program, in which aged care residents visit our school each week.
  • Showing respect for war veterans in the Honour Our Fallen program, in which students research an individual veteran and place a flag on a grave each ANZAC Day.
  • Giving to Pop In, which helps connect women impacted by domestic violence to the services they need.
  • Yarning with Elders from local First Nations communities.

51³Ô¹ÏÍøÔÚÏß Values

From the moment they start in Pre-K, ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï students are taught what it means to uphold our values:

  • Show courage.
  • Be kind.
  • Seek wisdom.

Each week, we focus on a character strength, such as kindness, empathy, compassion or curiosity. We discuss the concept in class, morning assembly and formal assembly, and we share stories that inspire the children to contemplate our values.

Buddies

Every Junior School student is matched with their own buddy from an older peer group. They catch up once a week to share a book, work on an activity together or just hang out. It's one of the ways we build kindness, which leads to children becoming confident, socially aware communicators.

Our House System

At ºÚÁϳԹÏ, students are placed in one of six Houses that see them through from Pre-K to Year 12. Junior School students take part in House competitions such as sports carnivals and other special events. It's another way we build connection and provide opportunities to collaborate in different types of teams.

Nugia Canbe

A translation of 'camp fire' from the local Aboriginal language, Nugia Canbe at ºÚÁÏ³Ô¹Ï is a time of connection and consideration. It's a pastoral time, in which students have the opportunity to incorporate our values of courage, kindness and wisdom into their daily lives, as they make plans, discuss character strengths, connect with their buddy, chat with their class or take part in a URSTRONG lesson.
